Intellectual property rights Issues and Open Source Development

NASSCOM Tech Series- OpenSource Development | 6 June 2013, Noida

As part of the Tech Series, NASSCOM has introduced this topic on “Open Source Development Methodology”. Open Source solutions are being adopted increasingly by conservative IT organizations, driven by risk mitigations and cost. Typically, organizations adopt the Open Source software stack bottom-up that is they start on the system infrastructure level (eg. LINUX) and then move up the stack to application infrastructure (think applications servers) and to business applications.

Our panel discussion will focus on basics of patent, open source and licensing. We will try to discuss regarding the choice between patents & open source from the perspective of business owners. The discussion will also include examples / case studies related to patents and open source, possible strategies to plan international tech venture in light of patents and open source, and understanding of patent laws and other regulations related to open source.

With recent developments in technology, patents are highly debated and various alternatives such as open source licensing are being explored. So, the session will focus on a way forward by creating a balance between the two, and will focus on key points as to why patents & open source should co-exist.
